Julie Green Petersen
May 20, 1949 - October 6, 2023

Zephyrhills, FL.  On October 6, 2023, Julie Green Petersen of Underhill Center Vermont passed away peacefully after a long illness. Born in Burlington Vermont on May 20, 1949 to Helen Fogg Green and Dr. Douglas F., Green, Julie attended a private school in Switzerland and later graduated from Burlington High School in 1967. From there she studied liberal arts at Goddard College where her natural humanity and passion for animals took shape to refine her career goals. She worked for the state of Vermont  as a caseworker for the elderly, families in distress and handicapped children and always found time to volunteer for animal rescue operations. In that capacity she was instrumental in the design and implementation of adoption and rescue/spay/release programs.  Her love of animals gained her the respect and friendship of a number of like minded people and were a source of great satisfaction to her.  Her pride and joy was her home, a 200+ year old house in Underhill Center next to the house where her mother was born.  She had a fierce sense of independence and even in her illness, insisted on living at home.  Despite the illness, she moved to Zephyrhills, Florida to escape the cold Vermont winter and loved it there, meeting nice people who helped her through her most difficult time.

Friends and family remember Julie’s unique, often quirky, sense of humor as she recounted stories and legends  depicting human idiosyncrasies, never sparing her own. Intellectually curious, Julie enjoyed history, antique collecting and was an avid reader with an artistic bent, which she expressed through jewelry making,

Julie leaves a daughter and son in law Erin and Michael Zappolo, grandsons Dominic, Logan and Alex Zappolo and two brothers, Douglas and Gary Green.

I will remember Julie fondly. Julie loved her cats and was fiercely independent and private. She loved giving her option on local issues. I’ve missed our spirited conversations at town hall. I’m glad you finally made it to Florida and beyond.
