Kevin D. Astl was born August 18, 1970 in Jefferson City, Missouri, and lived in Wesley Chapel, Florida since 1995 until his death from cancer on December 7, 2021. He is predeceased by his beloved brother, John.
Kevin is survived locally by his cherished sons, Tyler & Dean Astl, and parents Alfred & Sandy Astl. He is also survived by a large extended family, all hailing originally from Austria, Switzerland, & Missouri: 6 aunts & 6 uncles (with their spouses/partners), 21 first cousins (with their spouses/partners), and many second cousins. He also leaves behind many special life-long friends.
Kevin’s undergraduate degree in political science was from the University of South Florida, and his Juris Doctorate was earned at Mercer University.
Music was always an integral component of the Astl family. Kevin was always fond of music, but after his brother started some bands, Kevin took his father’s old Slingerland drum set and started practicing non-stop in the garage. That dedication paid off as he quickly became an amazing, breakneck-speed drummer. He formed his first band with some friends he met in the local music scene.
Kevin’s first band, Epitaph, played a few shows and recorded two demos that were so good that they had a re-release just last year to critical acclaim (Epitaph – Echoes Entombed: The Demo Anthology). After Epitaph disbanded, Kevin joined his brother as interim drummer for Resurrection. They played a few shows but never got the chance to record together.
His next project was Adrift. After recording a full length album, Absolution, they headed across the U.S. on a 3 week bicoastal tour, including the Big Spring Jam Festival in Alabama that drew over 200,000 people.
After a small hiatus, Kevin co-founded his latest band, Prisoner/Hostage. They were working on an album and practicing weekly.
Kevin was always open to new music ideas and enjoyed collaborating with his friends & bandmates. He was well loved in the music world, legal kinships, & his community.
There will be a Memorial Celebration which will be announced at a later date.
