SEAN CARPENTER KEENEY

December 19, 1951 – July 19, 2023

Born on Governor’s Island, NYC, NY, Sean is predeceased by parents, Army Colonel and Dr. Paul Aloysius Keeney and Ann Fitzgerald Ward Kelly, and sister Ann Keeney. He is survived by his wife, Ellen Amy Keeney of 42 years; daughter, Michelle Irene June Keeney (Diana Flores Cayatano); brother, Cormac Ward Keeney, niece, Helen Keeney-Klump, and great nephew, Thomas Michael Klump. Also surviving are his 2 beloved dogs, Monty and Nina, and 2 grand-dogs, Cooper and Jasper.

Sean was an employee of Miami-Dade County government for 30 years, having retired from the County’s Department of Corrections as a Personnel Specialist in 2011. He also spent many years working in the County’s Clerk of Courts office. During his earlier employment he worked as a bank teller, and he was very proud that he had worked at the hat shop at Disney World stitching names on the mouse ears.

Sean was a graduate of Atherton High School in Louisville, KY and obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in History from Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, KY. He avidly followed all the athletic programs from Western Kentucky throughout his life. While at the University, he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity.

He was a world traveler, having visited China in 1998 to adopt his beloved daughter, Michelle and having traveled through England and Scotland, while visiting friends in London. He also enjoyed numerous road and train trips with his wife and daughter. He took up collecting magnets of every place he visited, and displayed his vast magnet collection on boards in his home office.

Sean was also a sharp dresser and often started fashion trends among his colleagues. He was also a collector of men’s colognes and watches. His other interests included model railroading, weather, politics, athletics, medicine (he liked to read his dad’s medical books), animals, country and gospel music, music of the 60’s and 70’s and listening to Fox News. Perhaps his most endearing quality was his great sense of humor, including a lot of puns, bringing great joy and laughter to everyone he met. He also kept a daily detailed agenda of everyday events such as the food he ate, his exercise routine, major news events, weather, and his other activities.

Sean spent the last 10 years of his life recovering from cardiac and pulmonary issues, as well as a stroke. He was very dedicated to doing the best he could during many years of physical and occupational therapy, working with a trainer, and attending senior classes at the Y. In the end, he was brought down by a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s during at home Hospice care.

He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, July 22, 2023 from 1-3 pm at Coastal Cremations and Funeral Care 4911 Allen Road Zephyrhills, FL 33541 from 1-3 pm with a service to begin at 2:30 pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Pasco County Animal Services in Land ‘O Lakes, FL.. (https://www.pascocountyfl.gov/222/Donations)

I am very sorry, Sean was a wonderful person. When I went to WKU , he would take me and my roommate out to dinner. We were two starving students and we would choose the most expensive dinner on the menu. Our Thoughts are with your family. Godspeed.

Ellen and Michelle: I am very sorry for your loss. The passing of Sean has gotten me by surprise. Sean was a great human being and coworker. He was very smart, hardworking person and friend. He loved his wife and daughter with all his heart. Rest in the peace of the Lord. We will miss you, Sean. Thank you for all your help and kindness at work.

Our heartfelt sympathies go out to the Keeney family. Michelle frequently speaks of her father with great affection, and we now understand why. With his entertaining stories and jokes, he would have fit in perfectly with any of our crews, just as Michelle has effortlessly done since her initial day at work. We are all saddened by your loss and hope that the cherished memories of his remarkable life bring you comfort and love.
